Hope Chest for Breast Cancer

I am honored to be a part of a new project!

A friend of mine, Korie Regan, is leading this project for the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer (www.hopechest.us). We are putting together a calendar to raise funds for the Hope Chest while honoring women, sharing stories of HOPE and helpful information on breast cancer. They have gathered 12 monthly stories on women that have experienced breast cancer and what gave them HOPE during that time. It’s going to be a really neat project that the Hope Chest will do every year.

Also…as a side note, you can honor someone by “purchasing a day” for $25 to celebrate them. Their name will be listed on that day either in “honor of”, “memory of” or in “thanks to”. Please let me know if you'd like the contact info to purchase a date!

Duke - 18 months

Duke is such a sweet little guy, but he is "all boy!"
He smiled at me right away and then ran around showing me everything...his toy farm and several other toys.

Duke's nanny joined us to help with photos and to be in a few.

Getting an 18 month old to sit "nicely" and smile for the camera is really a performance. But, I tell parents all the time...you only need one split second of a smile to capture it. We managed to get a few family shots. And I LOVE the one of Duke and his mom, when she's giving him a kiss.

He sat so nicely when he was reading his books. It was sweet.

This is definitely my favorite of the day. Duke's room was so cute and he was playing peek-a-boo with me from in his crib. He'd JUMP UP and his smile was to die for!

I can't wait to photograph your 2nd birthday, Buddy!

Walk For Life

I have started to work with another non-profit organization - New Life Family Services .

This is a little blip of info from their website.

"At New Life Family Services, we compassionately open our doors and our hearts to women and men who believe that abortion is the "only" solution to an unplanned pregnancy. Through practical and spiritual counsel, we provide education and support with the hope that each client will make a life-affirming decision for their unborn child.

Every day lives are being saved. In 2008, our five centers served over 10,000 clients! Of the abortion-minded clients who had ultrasounds at New Life, more than 9 out of 10 changed their minds from abortion to life because of the ultrasound images they were able to see! We are here to reach out and show the love of Christ to those in a difficult situation, touching hearts and lives, one at a time."

They offer all kinds of support: free ultrasounds, education, abortion recovery support, adoption services, and much more.

The staff and volunteers at NLFS are kind and loving as they help people to see that there are options and abortion is not the only way.

This year, I photographed their fund raising walk.
It was so cold, but the show must go on! Families walked, kids walked and even DOGS walked for LIFE!

There was an awesome puppet show - a non-profit organization based in Chanhassen - The First Light Puppets.

I have the pleasure of working with New Life Family Services again later this summer, so watch for more pictures.

Mom's Fellowship

I belong to a Mom's Fellowship at our old church and LOVE it!
The moms are awesome and Brenna loves being with the other kids.

This year, it has been an amazing blessing to be a part of the group. Karen, our fearless leader, has directed the group, reasearched things, read books, created meals and snacks, and so much more. We appreciate her willingness and servant's heart. What a great example for each of us.

For Mother's Day, I decided to give each of the mom's a mini-session after our group. So, here are some of the pictures.

Sweet little Joey

Joey is such a happy little guy.
Brenna and I went to visit Joey and his mom, Annie. The babies enjoyed "playing together" and interacting.

Annie and her husband, Mike, have four daughters (all the way from elementary school through college age!) and along came Joey. What a blessing! They recently moved to a new home with lots of land. We spent time inside with tons of natural light and then headed out to the swing.

When Joey smiles at you, your heart melts. I don't know if anyone could do him justice with the camera. He loves his Mommy so much, you can just see it in how he looks at her. It's beautiful!

I was told that this swing is Mike's favorite place...

Annie, I love spending time with you and your family. Thank you for allowing me to capture this stage of Joey's life.

Kala and David's wedding was beautiful. The ceremony was definitely a sacred event and the center of the day. The faith that they share is obviously the center of their relationship. It brought me such joy to be a part of their day.

Kendra, my associate photographer, and Monika, an extra assistant for the day, and I chatted about ideas for the day, the time line and the names of family and wedding party - as we normally do. But, today, as we drove to St Cloud, we were almost giddy. There was just something about that day. I'm still not sure what it was.

At the end of the night, I was talking with Kala's mom and she gave me one of the best complements of my career. She simply said, "now I know why Kala wanted to hire you so badly." Wow. Thank you.

As some of you know, I love to use my "gifts" to bless others. God is to faithful and has blessed me with so much. One of the ways I give is to record the journey of people's lives for them and for their families. If you click on my ALS tag, you'll see three families that I've done this for.

Cindy and Bob are family friends of ours. I am horrible at understanding and explaining
medical terms, so here's a little bit of her caring bridge site...

Cindy "was diagnosed in late October with "Stage 3b non-small-cell adenocarcinoma located primarily in (her) right lung. However, there is an enlarged lymph node that also probably is cancerous, as well as cells in the sac around the heart. This precludes surgery."

Cindy is a very loving mother and church volunteer. She and her family spent our time together laughing, talking, and playing Clue. Her youngest son even played his BANJO for us!

Thank you for allowing me to capture a little piece of your lives together.

A group of Timberwolves were at the Ball to encourage the foundation! Crunch even served appetizers!

Many of the MN Vikings, including Jim Kleinsasser and his wife (and co-chair) Christa, came to show their support of Make A Wish.

The Vikings and Timberwolves came out in full-force to support the Make a Wish Foundation.

Mark and Linda got married at my favorite chapel...Nazareth Hall at Northwestern College in Roseville, MN. Although I don't often declare favorites, Darrin and I were married at Naz Hall in 2005 and my dad, an Art Historian, is working towards restoration and preservation of the buildings. I figure I have good enough reason to have this as my favorite.

I had not met Linda until the wedding day. Linda is radiantly beautiful.

Getting married in May, you never know what the trees and flowers will be like. God blessed Linda and Mark with an amazingly beautiful day and look at this tree! I went outside and saw it and was so excited! Isn't it perfect!?!

The ceremony was definitely the focus of Mark and Linda's day. Their faith, commitment and love was evident in all of the day's details.

There were many great reception details as well. My favorites were the individual cakes on each table and the coffee bar. Love it!

Kendra and I were blessed to be a part of this wedding. What a way to start our busy season!

I began volunteering with Make a Wish Minnesota three years ago and LOVE working with them. I am blessed to get know wish families, staff and volunteers. The Wish Ball is an amazing event and I am always blown away by the generosity of Minnesotans.

Debbie Bequette and Christa Kleinsasser (wife of Viking's player, Jim Kleinsasser) were the co-chairs for 2009. Their hard work paid of with an event that was beautiful and that will bless many children and families. Kendra, my associate shooter, and I were honored to be a part of the night.

Christa and Jim play a HUGE roll in the prosperity of Make a Wish Minnesota. Thank you for your generosity as you give of your time and gifts!

Debbie and Bryon are familiar faces to me, as they have been a part of Make a Wish quite a bit longer that I have. Your commitment to excellence is evident! Thank you.

Betty Crocker Corporation was the Presenting Sponsor for the evening.

The auctioneer, Col. Kurt Johnson, was kept busy all night! He ran back and forth, all over the stage as hands went up and bids continued to rise.

Wish kids helped design this amazing quilt. They also stood on stage to display it for the guests to see.

Fred Hoiberg of the MN Timberwolves traded places with the auctioneer. He told the audience that he used to be an auctioneer for pig auctions in Iowa...Who knew!?!

One of the generous auction items was seats at the MN pro sports event of your choice! The Vikings players strutted their stuff on the stage to help raise the bidding!

Wish kids, Corrin and Victor, present a beautiful hand-blown glass vase that their family helped design.

The Wish Ball this year was a night to savor the beauty of the lush, tropical décor and experience the flavors of authentic Latin cuisine designed by Chef Amalia Damgaard. Guests danced to the Cuban rhythms of Nachito Herrera and his Latin orchestra. It was an evening we will never forget!

This will be my first official "hair-fashion" shoot!

Rosalee, Master Stylist and Owner of Whiplash Salon, and I have been brainstorming and talking about this for over a year now. We are thrilled to have finally set a date!

If you are wondering what "hair-fashion" is, check out this site http://www.babak.ca. AMAZING! This guy wins every year (I think)!

We are looking for 3 to 5 models that are able to do the shoot on Tuesday May 19, 2009. Depending upon the scheduling I would like to begin prepping the first model around 3 p.m. and Alison will begin shooting around 6p.m. We will be shooting in Minneapolis, but getting ready elsewhere. You would need to be available on Tuesday, May 19.

Rosalee will create a fashionable hairstyle and apply makeup for each model. This is a dramatic look, so it is likely she will use extensions, wigs and false lashes. If you have one, please bring a cocktail dress to the shoot.

We are looking for models of all kinds, specifically models with different ethnic backgrounds. If you are interested, please send a headshot and full-body shot to alison@alisonleaphotography.com. No experience needed. If you are under 18, I will need your parents to consent by signing a special form.

One of my favorite parts of my job is that I get to continue relationships with my clients and we become friends.

I photographed Laurel's brother and sister-in-law's wedding a few years ago and then they had me take Bryson's photos. We did three shoots in twelve months. Now, they have a new addition...Jerek. I am honored to be back taking pictures for their family.

The boys are such happy kids and so well-behaved. I really enjoyed talking with them and seeing Bryson as a "big boy" - he's 2, ya know? (Just look at his hand...he's showing me.)

The relationships between children and parents are even more amazing and wonderful to me, now that I have my own little girl. What joy children bring to life!

Sarah, Amy, Chris and David decided to give their mom (and MIL) photos for Mother's Day. What a great gift!

We had a blast hanging out this morning. Somehow, it worked out that everyone could get together on a Friday! Two of them had the day off of school, Chris didn't work either and Amy works nights. I love that it worked out because I really enjoyed meeting them.

We thought it would be fun to have a nice headshot of each of the kids.

Groom's Dinner

Rob and Elizabeth invited me to join them for their Groom's dinner. It was held at parents of the Groom's house - beautiful!

The Rominski and Humes families were incredibly welcoming and sweet. I enjoyed spending the extra time celebrating with Rob, Liz and their closest friends and family. Listening to the toasts from Thursday night made me excited to continue to get to know these two wonderful people.

I love Verizon Wireless.

Way back in high school, my mom got a car phone. Yes, I mean a CAR PHONE. One that was built right into her white, 1991 Le Baron Convertible. When I started driving, I inherited the car and also the phone and phone number...I still have the same phone number. When you call me, you are dialing the same number I had at age 16! That is 12 years now.

We had Verizon back then, and I have always loved them. They have been so good to me. One of my best friends and my husband both switched to them because of me. (I'm a little proud about it.)

Anyways, all that to say...we photographed their corporate event last weekend.
I am offering a NEW experience: Crazy Photobooth! Friends and family can take a nice portrait...but they often get a bit crazy! Check these pix out.

I was Hilary's youth leader when she was in middle school and high school. Then, I was honored to write her a recommendation to get into school at Seattle Pacific. She's an amazing girl...and so easy to photograph!

After years of hearing about Mike, I finally got to meet him. He has a great heart and I can tell that he is madly in love with Hilary. Nothing but the best for this girl!

Since Bobby and Sara are good friends of mine, I brought along my baby.
Faith LOVED Brenna! It was too cute.

Her "o" mouth is a reaction to seeing Baby Brenna. They are buddies already!

Sara told me she wanted a shot of Faith holding their hands from behind...so sweet. In the midst of the shoot, Faith was hungry, but a bit distracted. Bob had to feed her whenever he got the chance.

Julia grew up just down the street from me. She rode the same elementary school bus with me, although she was several years younger. We "became friends" on Facebook and now I get to photograph her wedding.

Julia and Craig met at college and have been together for five and a half years. They are getting married this August.

We are incredibly blessed.

August 2007, Darrin started his job at Eden Prairie Presbyterian Church (EPPC) as the Youth Director for 7-12 grade students. What a community of people!

One of the families at EPPC has shared with us that they are going to adopt a little boy. WOW! One of my dreams, as a photographer, is to take photos for different missions organizations. One of my dreams, as a person, is to adopt a child.

In their blog, L and M journal their way through day one of their thought process. What a gift to be able to read along with them and pray for their family and son living around the world.

As I read, I was moved by this quote.
M and L went to Honduras last year and this was L's account of how God touched her heart. She is talking about her time with the children.

"They were starving for our affection and fought over our lap space! I knew pretty quickly I would never recover from the sights I saw and the emotions I felt, and leaving that place was positively terrible. It isn't that I wanted to stay and live there - it's that I wanted those children to experience the kind of love that my children know; I want ed them to know what it is like to lay on the couch and snuggle before you go to bed; I wanted them to hear the clapping and cheers of excitement from the sidelines of a soccer field; I wanted them to know what it is like to sleep under the Christmas tree in anticipation of Santa's arrival; but most of all I wanted them to know that God sent us to them and that we were going to help make a difference in their lives……somehow…someday."

Noah - 6 months

Noah is such a doll. I enjoyed photographing him - along with is beautiful parents.

I'm supposed to be taking a break, but I love it too much. I just can't stay away...

Noah's skin is so light and smooth. What a beautiful complexion.

What a smiley little guy. He is so sweet. When he gets tired, he sucks on his pinky and ring-finger. Noah's big blue eyes melt me.

Noah loves his bouncy horse. It's too cute. The horse neighs and then it plays music like "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain". He laughs and laughs and jumps for 15 minutes.

Disney Vacation

We've been out of town...

As many of you know, I am a big fan of Florida and Disney World. I worked there as a lifeguard the summer of 2002 and have been there many times. This year, Darrin and I went with my parents to their condo in Bradenton, FL and then over to Disney for two nights. We were fortunately to have my parents around because Darrin and I a few date nights in, along with all of our family time.

Since I'm on maternity leave, I'm not taking too many pictures, so I thought I'd add a few from our trip...of Brenna, of course.

New Year's Resolution...

Midnight last night was different from any other New Year's Celebration for me. My husband and I cleaned and organized. Then, Brenna woke up around 11:40, just in time to count down while I fed her.

What a celebration for us! The start of a New Year, a time to look at all we've been given, be thankful for what God has given us in 2008 and look forward to all that God will bless us with in 2009.

My New Year's Resolution is to be pickier about how I spend my time and focus on the most important things in my life: God, family and the amazing people that I get to serve.

I am booking up quickly for 2009!
It's very exciting...especially with the Baby almost ready to arrive (due Nov 16).

I have 11 weddings booked for 2009 and am hoping to book somewhere between 15-20. That's an average of 11 months in advance. With the economy as it is, I didn't expect to be quite so busy so early. Since I've only booked up 11 weekends right now, I've still got plenty open for business! If you are checking out my info, be sure to call or email and see if I'm booked for your date.

My life is blessed!!!

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me, booked shoots, booked weddings, and passed along my information. Word of mouth is the best advertising!

I love that campus because there are so many amazing places to stop and take pictures, and all of them are within walking distance.

Alex and Jeremy got married at Trellis in Stillwater, MN on October 11. It was a beautiful 70 degree day in the midst of 60 degree weather. Thank goodness because the wedding was outside!

I won't write too much because I have so many images to share...

I will say this...we were taking a photo behind this great little barn at Trellis and all of a sudden, this idea popped into my head! As many (or all) of you know, I used to be an Art teacher. The Art History that my Dad (and favorite professor at Northwestern College) ingrained in me just sorta' spewed out! This is what I got...

I shot at my new favorite outdoor venue last weekend!!!

Actually, I loved it so much that I called into the radio station (107.1) on the way home to tell them about it. I realize that is kind of silly, but on Saturday nights, they ask people to call in with cool new experiences in the Twin Cities. I gave their website and hope that someone will call them because of it!

Sherri and her Mom, Sally, just opened this year and have already doubled their business for 2009! I am impressed by and excited for both of them.

My maternity shoot

So, once again, I had a friend do some maternity photos of me. They turned out great!

I began working for Kelly Brown in 2003 as one of her assistants. The next three years after that, I was an "associate photographer" for her business. This means, she booked weddings for me. I was the lead photographer for those weddings. It was an awesome partnership.

Every year, I have taken photos of Kelly and her boys. So, when I got pregnant, she offered to do the same for us.

Kelly took Darrin and I to these beautiful fields in Maple Grove and then to a rotting building. LOVE IT!

I've been looking forward to photographing Tanya and Aaron's day since our first meeting. They are a great couple!

September 20, 2008 - June and Duane

June and Duane were married at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Minnepaolis. It is absolutely beautiful!

The architecture of the building and the art around it were definitely photo-worthy. My assistants and I arrived early and walked around the church several times, oooooh-ing and ahhhhh-ing at everything.

June was walked down the isle by her three sons.

During the ceremony, June and Duane used kites as a part of the celebration. I love when there are things at weddings that I have never seen before! Together, they made each kite. Duane, I found out, is amazing at sewing. What a catch!

"...a beautiful butterfly that symbolizes the resurrection of Christ and...a new phase of life..."

"Bread has been a symbol of sustenance and fish a symbol of Christ and baptism."

After the ceremony, June and Duane, and several of their family and friends released doves.

"We have chosen to release doves for three reasons..."

- to symbolize peace, hope and love in our marriage

- to honor our parents and grandparents who have physically left our lives but are always in our hearts

- for our family and friends who play such important roles in our lives

**The turtle doves were trained to return to their homes. Amazing!**

The reception was held at the Women's Club. Family and friends gathered with them, talking, eating good food, and celebrating the new marriage.

We finished our day by take a few photos at June's home in Minneapolis. What a beautiful home with great details and so much love.

Jenna's God-children

My good friend, Jenna, spends a lot of time with her God-children. They are beautiful and sweet kids. I just love them. Jenna brings them to church with her on Sundays and I ALWAYS look forward to seeing them.

My goal was to capture their individual personalities and the amazing relationships that each of them have with one another.

Ella was born extremely early and wasn't expected to survive, much less THRIVE! Way to go, Girlie! I am so proud of you and your accomplishments! You are beautiful.

Isiah is such a little man. He is growing up so fast.
I love his sensitive heart.

I love this one, where Isiah is giving Ella a kiss. He was sitting next to her, but we asked him to give her a kiss and he had to stand up and kiss her on the top of her head. Often, it also includes him wrapping his arms around her head to hold her still so he can plant a kiss right on her head. He's such a nice big brother!

Jenna is such an amazing person. Her love for people shows through in everything she does. I am so blessed to have her in my life.

My Cousins...

Henry, Hailey, Harrison and Hobie are like my kids. I have babysat them since I was young and now Hailey can't wait to get her hands on my little one. She'll be an awesome babysitter - she learned from the best!

My uncle Tim is only 15 years older than me and I am about 15 years older than his son.
Growing up, I babysat ALL THE TIME! I especially love my cousins.

Henry has always been serious and intellectual. His sense of humor, storytelling, and observations have always engaged and intrigued us (his family).

Hailey is my girl. We have 17 cousins and only 5 of us are girls...and only Hailey and I live in MN...so we've always been pretty inseparable at family events. She is absolutely beautiful!

Harrison, oh, I mean, Harry...when he was about 2 he informed me that he doesn't like to be called anything other than Harry...is mischievous. He is quick-witted and likes to experience and experiment.

Hobie, is sweet and clever. He gets along with everyone and can't help but smile and laugh.

Tim is the diving coach for White Bear Lake High School and Mahtomedi High School. This means that Hailey is on his team! I love my uncle. He always has a story to tell and is ready to relax and enjoy life. But, he's also very hard working and seems to know how to do anything and everything that has to do with remodeling.

Cheryl has always been my friend. My other favorite part of babysitting (after being able to spend time with my kids) was being able to stay and just chat for literally hours after Tim and Cheryl got home. Cheryl says it like it is and I always know that she's being honest with me. I think that of all the things I miss from being a kid, I miss those conversations the most.

Now, I get to have them with Hailey when she comes to babysit my daughter - in about 8 weeks!!!

The Arend Family Singers

The Arends are like family to me. We have so many great connections and have experienced life together for five years now.

They
- were students in my Art class at NHCA
- introduced me to my husband
- sang in our wedding (4 of the 5 kids, in our children's choir)
- play softball with my husband
- went to church with us

Julie has become one of my dearest friends. I am so thankful to have her in my life. What a great support, mentor and reminder of Truth in my life.

I've enjoyed watching the kids grow up. DJ, their oldest son, was in my first 8th grade class of kids. He's graduated and at Bethel University now.

Sara, the baby, used to come and sit on my lap during worship at church every week. She would always ask to come home with me. I got a lot of good "mommy practice" in with her.

There is so much more!
I love how hard of a worker Mark is and then when he comes home and sees his wife, it's like she's the only thing that matters. I can see it in his eyes and the way that he looks at her. He comes and scoops up his kids, or takes time to wrestle or give a hug, even when I know he must be exhausted from his day.

DJ is a blast to chat with. I appreciate that he lets me give him "advice" and "words of wisdom" and cares what I have to say. He's a wise man, and loves his family dearly. I have never seen him yell or get really upset at any of the other kids. His patience and calm are contagious (I hope).

Paul...when I started teaching at NHCA, he was in 5th grade. He got the star role in the school musical. I helped choreograph it and we got to spend quite a bit of time hanging out together. He has always been one of the most respectful and sweet guys. His mind is always going, he is very deep and I love to hear about his thoughts.

Jessica (she and Luke are twins!) is always there are ready to help. She loves to do things for you and not because she has to, but because she loves you. Her gift of service exposes her big heart. She is so beautiful! Her smile lights up the room and I can always count on a hug.

Luke, is quiet and contemplative, but has an awesome sense of humor! I am often in awe of him. He is one of the smartest kids I know...especially in ways that I'm not so smart. He knows how things work and can play the piano. Not just play a song he sees and has practiced, but REALLY PLAY! I don't know if I can think of a time when I have arrived at their house and he wasn't at the piano just playing (well, maybe when he's on the computer, gaming).

Sara, little Sara Grace...what can I say? Energy! Excitement! Bouncing! She reminds me of myself when I was little. Sara is always excited about something. Excited that I'm there. Excited for my baby. Excited for school. Just plain excited! She makes life seem worth while.

Julie, I already touched on a bit, but I am just in amazement at how she loves her family. She is self-sacrificing and one of the most wise and loving people I have ever met. I hope that I can be half the mom that she is.

OK, now that I'm in tears (remember, I'm also 7 months pregnant), I just have to say that I am so blessed by the Arend family. I hope that I was able to capture their personalities in these photos.

Emily & Brian's Engagement shoot

I have been teaching private photography lessons to one of my former students this summer. Will is very self-motivated and always willing to learn more. I have appreciated his creativity and question-asking this summer.

While we were doing class together, Will was asked to take candid photos and some "artsy" shots at Emily & Brian's wedding. In preparation for the wedding, Will and I decided we would do an engagement shoot for them. I guided Will through some poses and general stuff that I like to do at a shoot. Then, we both took photos! He did a great job.

After about 30 minutes, I set Will free and I can't wait to see what he did!!! Maybe he'll even let me post a few images.

August 30, 2008 - Eryn & Titus

Eryn and I met in college. It was move-in day and I had already been at school for almost a week to take photos for the newspaper.

Simply because I'm me, I walked up and down my dorm hallway, helping people carry boxes and introducing myself to EVERYONE! Yes, everyone.

I think Eryn may have been a bit scared of me when we first met. I'm sure I said something like, "Hi! I'm Ali and we live next door to each other!" with a huge grin on my face.

Sophomore year, we lived in the same "quad" - 8 girls, 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. What a BLAST! I had awesome roommates.

As you can see, I didn't take all of the pictures at Eryn and Titus' wedding. I was also a bridesmaid. So, I got up in the morning, did my hair and make up..took photos of the couple...got my dress on...took photos of the families...was in the wedding party photos and the ceremony...gave a toast...and took a few more final photos. Whew! What a great day! Boy, was I exhausted, but I wouldn't change it for anything.

Titus has five younger brothers and two sisters. Here's the brothers plus, Sam, the best man.
